Sample Schedule:
PM Four/Five-year-old Class

The afternoon 4’s/5’s class was developed to offer four full afternoon sessions (Monday through Thursday, 1-4 pm) for children who are not quite ready for kindergarten, but are ready for another day of preschool and will benefit from additional time to further develop socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. We firmly believe in respecting and understanding the individual growth and development of a child. While still play based and developmentally appropriate, this class provides additional opportunities for art, music, science, literacy, math, drama, and self help skills. Our afternoon program can give children the gift of time to build the necessary skills for success throughout their school experience.

The daily schedule includes whole group instruction and activities, small group instruction, and independent “hands-on” learning through exploration and inquiry.

1:00 Director greets children one by one as they enter the room and has a moment to check in with families as needed.

1:00-1:45 Indoor play. This is a combination of free play and teacher guided projects/activities. Some examples are:

1:45-2:00 Clean up and bathroom break

2:00-3:00 Snack time and circle time, a teacher-led time with songs, thematic games, science experiments, and skill building to work towards kindergarten readiness. On Mondays the children bring their own snack to school to work on self-care and independence in preparation for kindergarten.

3:00-3:40 Outdoor play in our large, shaded play area. Activities include, tricycle track, large sandbox and play house, play structure with slides, tire swing, and more!

3:40-4:00 Small story groups. Children choose a book and have a few minutes to look through the book on their own. Then the teacher reads the books out loud to the children before returning outside for dismissal. We may also use this time to work on kindergarten readiness and self independence skills in a small group setting.

4:00 Outside Dismissal at the play area gate.
